TRAFFIC WASTE

Why Your Ads Are Working—But Your Store Isn’t

Clicks are arriving and campaign metrics look healthy, but sales remain flat. The advert may have done its job while the store loses the customer after the click.

THE POST-CLICK PROBLEM

Why eCommerce brands waste money on traffic

You can optimise campaigns, change creative and test audiences without moving revenue if the destination fails to turn attention into action. What looks like a marketing problem is often a leaky customer journey.

Traffic amplifies what is already there. It does not repair what is broken.

More traffic does not automatically mean more sales

Doubling spend may double visits while leaving the same inefficient conversion rate in place. Before scaling acquisition, understand what happens between the click and checkout.

Six leaks hiding after the click

The advert creates an expectation. The landing experience must fulfil it quickly and credibly.

  • Slow pages
  • Product copy without a clear outcome
  • Missing reviews and reassurance
  • Discounts without a strong offer
  • Checkout and delivery friction
  • No post-purchase journey

Match the landing page to the promise

Campaign message, creative and landing page should feel like one continuous experience. Send visitors to the most relevant destination, repeat the offer they clicked, answer their objections and keep one clear action visible.

Fix the store, then scale the campaign

Better product pages, clearer offers, lifecycle email and useful reporting turn advertising into part of a connected sales system. Measure landing-page conversion, add-to-basket rate, checkout completion, average order value and profit after ad spend—not clicks alone.

Healthy campaign metrics can hide a commercial failure

A strong click-through rate proves that the advert earns attention. It does not prove that the landing page earns trust or that checkout makes the purchase easy. Advertising platforms optimise the signals they can see; the business still needs to examine the full commercial journey.

This is why creative teams and store teams cannot operate as separate worlds. The promise, page and purchase must agree.

The economics of a conversion leak

Imagine 10,000 paid visits reaching a store that converts at 2%. That produces 200 orders. More spend may bring another 10,000 visits and another 200 orders, but the underlying waste remains.

If focused store improvements lift conversion from 2% to 3%, the original traffic produces 300 orders. The exact result will vary, but the principle is constant: conversion improvement increases the value of every traffic source, including organic traffic you did not pay for per click.

Diagnose the journey stage by stage

Do not judge the store using one overall conversion number. Look for the point where intent collapses. High landing-page exits suggest a promise or relevance problem. Product views without basket additions suggest weak value, information or price framing. Basket activity without checkout completion often points to delivery, trust or technical friction.

  • Ad click to landing-page engagement
  • Landing page to product view
  • Product view to Add to Basket
  • Basket to checkout
  • Checkout started to purchase
  • First order to repeat order

What to fix before increasing spend

Make the landing page fast and consistent with the advert. Clarify the offer above the fold. Improve product evidence, delivery information and mobile usability. Test checkout on real devices and build follow-up for visitors and customers.

Only then should you scale the campaign. More spend works best when it lands on a journey that has already demonstrated it can convert.

Report on the numbers that reach the bank

Clicks, CTR and cost per click are diagnostic metrics—not the final result. Connect advertising data with conversion rate, AOV, gross margin, returns and repeat purchase. That shows which campaign brings commercially valuable customers rather than merely inexpensive traffic.
