SHOPIFY CRO · DIAGNOSIS

Why is my Shopify conversion rate dropping?

A falling conversion rate is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The useful job is to work out which part of the customer journey changed before trying to fix everything at once.

If Shopify conversion rate falls, do not begin with a redesign. First separate changes in traffic quality from changes in the store experience. A store can look identical while conversion drops because the audience, product mix, stock position, pricing, delivery proposition or measurement changed.

Start by asking what changed

Compare the period before and after the decline. Look at device mix, traffic source, landing pages, new versus returning visitors, product availability, discounting, delivery promises and checkout completion. A useful CRO investigation narrows the problem before recommending design work.

1. Your traffic mix changed

A campaign can increase sessions while reducing conversion because the new visitors have weaker buying intent. More social traffic, broader paid targeting or a viral post may all change the denominator without anything being technically wrong with the store.

Compare conversion by channel and landing page rather than treating the sitewide rate as one truth. If paid traffic is the issue, connect the diagnosis to PPC and paid media management rather than trying to compensate for poor traffic with pop-ups.

2. Mobile shoppers are hitting more friction

Mobile problems are often small individually and expensive collectively: oversized banners, awkward menus, sticky elements covering controls, slow variant changes, weak image navigation, hidden delivery details or an add-to-basket button that appears too late.

Check mobile behaviour separately. A desktop-friendly product page can still fail when the same information becomes a long vertical stack on a phone.

3. Product pages are not answering buying questions

Customers may hesitate because sizing, compatibility, materials, delivery, returns, stock, guarantees or what is actually included are unclear. Product-page CRO is often less about adding persuasion and more about removing uncertainty.

4. Your merchandising is sending people to the wrong products

Collection sorting, filters, search, related products and campaign landing pages influence which products receive attention. Conversion can fall when high-traffic pages push low-stock, poorly priced or weakly explained products.

5. Price, delivery or promotional expectations changed

CRO cannot disguise a commercial disadvantage indefinitely. If competitors changed pricing, shipping became slower, a promotion ended or customers now discover delivery costs later in the journey, conversion can move even when the interface is unchanged.

6. Stock and variant availability are weaker

A product can generate plenty of sessions while popular sizes, colours or configurations are unavailable. Check whether visitors are landing on items they cannot actually buy.

7. Basket or checkout confidence has weakened

Unexpected delivery charges, unclear discount behaviour, payment limitations and unanswered return questions can cause abandonment late in the journey. Review the basket as a decision point, not merely a container for products.

8. The tracking changed

A measured conversion-rate drop can also be a measurement problem. Theme updates, consent changes, checkout changes, duplicated events or broken analytics can alter reported behaviour. Check Shopify orders against analytics before making expensive decisions from a single dashboard.

A practical diagnosis order

  1. Confirm whether actual orders and revenue changed, not only the reported rate.
  2. Segment by device and acquisition channel.
  3. Identify the landing pages and products behind the change.
  4. Check stock, pricing, delivery and promotional changes.
  5. Review product-page and collection friction.
  6. Inspect basket and checkout progression.
  7. Prioritise fixes by commercial impact and evidence.

When to bring in CRO support

If you have traffic but cannot confidently explain where customers are dropping out, a focused Shopify CRO review can turn the problem into a prioritised implementation list. The aim is not to redesign everything. It is to identify the most expensive friction and fix that first.
